WASHINGTON (AP) — About 75 employees from Volkswagen Group of America are volunteering to clean up the National Mall after the annual Independence Day celebration.
Employees from Volkswagen’s U.S. headquarters in Herndon, Virginia, are working Monday morning to paint chain fences and benches near the Washington Monument, clean up debris and pull weeds from the nearby Constitution Gardens.
The company also is donating the use of a 2014 VW Tourareg SUV to the nonprofit Trust for the National Mall for its work to help restore the national park.
Last year, Volkswagen announced a $10 million gift and a five-year commitment to help restore the National Mall.
Volkswagen Group President Michael Horn says that as a local company, VW is proud to help clean up after one of the nation’s best July 4th celebrations.
