Stocks mixed…More flights to Israel canceled…DOT wants to phase out older rail tank cars

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are mixed in early trading on Wall Street as investors look over a mixed batch of earnings reports. Apple shares are higher after its earnings report late yesterday was better than expected. Boeing is reporting a 52 percent jump in quarterly profits, but still investors aren’t impressed. Boeing shares fell 2.5 percent, the biggest decline in the Dow.

BERLIN (AP) — Air France and Germany’s two largest airlines are canceling more flights to Tel Aviv because of continuing safety concerns amid the fighting between Israel and Hamas. The European Aviation Safety Agency recommended yesterday that airlines not fly to Tel Aviv after a Hamas rocket exploded near Ben Gurion airport. Germany’s Lufthansa and Air Berlin have extended their cancellations through tomorrow and Air France said it was suspending its flights “until further notice.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal regulators are proposing to phase out thousands of older rail tank cars that carry crude oil. It’s the government’s response to a series of fiery train crashes over the past year, including a runaway oil train that exploded in Quebec, killing 47 people. The Department of Transportation wants older DOT-111 tank cars to be retrofitted or replaced. Accident investigators have complained for decades that the cars are too easily punctured or ruptured.

NEW YORK (AP) — Women who own small business are still far behind their male counterparts when it comes to getting loans and government contracts. That’s the finding of a congressional report by Democratic staffers of the Senate Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee. The report says that while businesses owned by women account for 30 percent of small companies, they receive only 4.4 percent of the total dollars in conventional small-business loans. The committee holds a hearing on the matter today.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump hopes to bring his signature brand of glitz to the nation’s capital with a new luxury hotel in the city’s third-tallest building. Trump is breaing ground today on a $200 million hotel that will transform the Old Post Office Building on Pennsylvania Avenue between the White House and the Capitol. The 115-year-old building includes a 315-foot observation tower that offers panoramic views of downtown Washington.
