WASHINGTON — Blue crabs are a summer staple in our region, and your love of the iconic crustacean could win you airline tickets.
The Chesapeake Bay Trust is holding a contest to name the blue crab on Maryland’s Treasure the Chesapeake license plates.
Winning entries in the Name the Crab contest will win a Southwest Airlines voucher, a free Bay plate and tickets to the Trust’s Treasure the Chesapeake Celebration gala. The deadline for entries is July 21. Three names will be chosen as finalists and voted on by the public; winners will be announced August 4.
Last year, the Trust held a similar contest to name the blue heron on the plate; the winning name was Wade. Last summer, USA Today named Maryland crabs one of the 20 regional specialties among the Best Iconic American Food.
