MANCHESTER, Md. (AP) — A tree fell at a summer camp during a strong thunderstorm, killing one child and injuring six others.
Cpl. Jon Light with the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office said the storm struck about 7 p.m. Tuesday. He said at the time, about 114 children ages 7 to 12 were attending an event at a hillside pavilion in the River Valley Ranch camp in Manchester. When the storm approached, the children were brought to a nearby shelter on the hill. He said the tree fell on them when they were en route, injuring seven children.
Light said one of the children later died from his injuries. He said the other six received injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening.
No one answered the phone Tuesday evening at the camp, which is described on its website as a Christian summer camp.
