Va. defense contractor sentenced for bribery

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — A Chesapeake defense contractor will spend four years in prison for paying bribes to public officials.

According to court documents, 50-year-old Roderic Smith and a business partner paid cash bribes to two officials from the Navy’s Military Sealift Command, Kenny Toy and Scott Miserendino. In exchange, their company received contracts on various telecommunications projects.

Smith pleaded guilty in March to a bribery conspiracy charge. The Virginian-Pilot (http://bit.ly/1isRXZg ) reports that he was sentenced Monday in U.S. District Court in Norfolk.

His business partner, Dwayne Hardman, and Toy are scheduled to be sentenced in July for their roles in the scheme.

Miserendino is scheduled to stand trial Sept. 30.
