SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (AP) — Costa Rican officials say they have seized more than four tons of cocaine from three boats disguised as fishing vessels off the Central American country’s Pacific Coast.
Eleven Costa Ricans were arrested in the seizure of the boats hundreds of miles from each other and far off the coast late Tuesday and early Wednesday. Officials haven’t said if the three boats are believed to have been working together.
At least one was seized in a joint operation between Costa Rica and the U.S. Coast Guard, which patrols much of the country’s coast in an effort to halt drug smuggling. Costa Rican waters have been increasingly used for drug smuggling in recent years.
Costa Rican officials say they have seized more than seven tons of cocaine since the start of May.
