Portsmouth police car hits and kills pedestrian

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) — A Portsmouth police officer is on administrative leave after the patrol car he was driving hit and killed a pedestrian.

Portsmouth police spokeswoman Misty Holley tells media outlets that the accident occurred around 9:10 p.m. Wednesday.

Holley identified the victim as 60-year-old Sanasga J. Weera of Portsmouth.

Holley says the marked patrol car’s lights and siren weren’t activated and the officer wasn’t responding to a call when the vehicle hit a 60-year-old man.

The man died at the scene. The man and the officer weren’t identified.

Holley says the police department is investigating the accident.
