CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Charlottesville police statistics show a racial disparity in warrantless patdowns conducted by city officers.
According to the statistics, black people suspected of a crime were frisked in 70 percent of about 140 patdowns in the past 18 months. During the same period, white peoples were frisked in 29 percent of the patdowns.
In another 120 cases, police stopped people suspected of a crime to ask questions but didn’t conduct frisks. In 64 percent of those instances, the people stopped were black. In 33 percent, the people were white.
The Daily Progress (http://bit.ly/1mC3ylUV ) reports that Police Chief Timothy J. Longo presented the findings to the City Council on Monday.
Census data show 70.3 percent of the city’s roughly 44,000 people are white and 19.5 percent are black.
