DANVILLE, Va. (AP) — A black bear drew dozens of bystanders in downtown Danville.
Danville police Capt. Dennis Haley says onlookers with cameras and cellphones chased the bear through the city streets before it sought refuge in a tree Thursday.
The Danville Register & Bee (http://tinyurl.com/ltynlbo) reports workers with Virginia Game and Inland Fisheries used a tranquilizer gun to shoot the bear, which eventually toppled onto a tarp held by Danville police. The bear was loaded into a large cage and would be released later.
Haley says bear sightings aren’t common in Danville. Still, he advises residents not to get too close and become paparazzi when they sight one.
