WASHINGTON – Multiple train malfunctions led to crowding and delays on Metro’s Red Line Thursday morning.
At around 8 a.m., a train had to offload its passengers at Union Station because of a problem with the train’s doors, according to a Metro spokesman.
About 20 minutes later, another train was forced to offload its passengers because of a similar door problem.
A few riders tweeted photos of packed platforms at Union Station, as the station struggled to cope with the crush of passengers.
Metro said it is likely the trains’ doors were not all registering as closed, forcing operators to remove all passengers for safety reasons.
The problem prompted warnings of delays extending to Shady Grove on the Red Line.
Just before 9 a.m., Metro said that normal service had resumed at Union Station, but residual delays remained in the system.
