WASHINGTON – An Anne Arundel County woman died after she was struck by a runaway car and hit a second time as the car’s owner tried to regain control of the vehicle.
Lee Shelia Mahoney, 73 of Edgewater, Md., died at an area hospital after she was hit Monday afternoon, according to the Anne Arundel County Police Department.
Mahoney was walking down the hill on Chesapeake Drive when a parked 2010 Ford Mustang started to roll down the street towards her, without a driver inside, according to police.
The vehicle hit her from behind then stopped on top of Mahoney. The owner of the Mustang David A. Garman, 23, of Edgewater, ran from a house to recover the car after he saw it drifting down the hill.
Garman did not know that Mahoney was beneath the Mustang when he started the ignition and began to back up the vehicle, hitting her a second time.
Police were called to the 1700 block of Chesapeake Drive about 3:20 p.m. to investigate. Mahoney was taken to Anne Arundel Medical Center where she died.
Police believe that driver error caused the crash. Garman had not park edthe Mustang with the wheels turned towards the curb with the parking brake on.
Police continue to investigate.
