WASHINGTON – A blue-green blaze was reported streaking through the sky around 7 p.m. on Thursday night, which an expert says was most likely a meteor.
Geoff Chester, with the U.S. Naval Observatory, said this was most likely a very bright type of meteor that is commonly referred to as a fireball.
“They occur on extremely clear nights and they generally get a lot of publicity when they happen,” Chester says.
They’re typically the size of a baseball or basketball, which Chester describes as a relatively small object, that burns up in the upper atmosphere of the earth and can be seen in a wide area.
Those who saw the blaze and want to know more about it can fill out a report at the American Meteor Society, who will use the information to find out more.
If you have a picture of Thursday’s meteor, tweet it to #WTOP.
Arturo Seleme caught video of the meteor and posted it on his Facebook page.
Here’s a tweet from the meteor society from a few days ago that shows a picture of a similar meteor.
