Americans are lacking in American history knowledge

WASHINGTON — Studies have repeatedly shown that Americans do not know much about America.

A 2011 Newsweek poll showed that 29 percent of Americans could not name the current vice president, Joe Biden.

The results also found that almost three quarters of participants could not correctly say why America fought in the Cold War.

Is it a lack of American history, or a lack of common knowledge?

A survey was released at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science that showed one in four Americans do not know that the Earth orbits the Sun, The Telegraph reports.

The study also showed a decline in television and newspapers as a primary source of information for participants, and an increasing reliance on the internet as a primary source.
