Friendship Heights Residents Oppose ‘Coney Island type’ Playground — The council of the Village of Friendship Heights wants to buy a playground for the neighborhood’s Page Park, but about 80 people have signed a petition opposing it because the colors and equipment are “garish.” Some are against it because it would mean the removal of a tree and one opponent claimed the bright colors and slides would “attract potential criminal perpetrators.” Another opponent said the playground is “a Coney Island type park with massive equipment,” that “is not appropriate for this area.” [The Gazette]
Westbard Developer Announces Times For Community Meetings — Equity One, the developer that hopes to redevelop the Westbard area of Bethesda, has announced times and a location for a pair of community meetings in which it will discuss its plans. The meetings are scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 29 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 1 from 10 a.m. to noon. Both meetings will take place at The Ballroom (5521 Landy Lane). Notification of the meeting times were sent out via email to those who have subscribed to updates on the “Westbard Vision” website. [Equity One]
Terps Track Team Reads To Elementary Students — Members of the University of Maryland’s track team again participated in Rock Creek Forest Elementary School’s “Reading Rocks” event on Wednesday. The Terps read to students in all grades for more than an hour. Andrew Valmon, the track coach at Maryland, helped start the event. Valmon’s kids go to the Chevy Chase school. [UMTerps]
Leggett Has Fundraising Advantage Over Duncan — County Executive Isiah Leggett has more than three times the amount of cash on hand as former County Executive Doug Duncan, who is taking on Leggett in June’s Democratic primary. 2013 campaign finance reports due on Wednesday show both got major contributions from traditional developer and big business sources. Duncan got major contributions from two entities not on the best terms with Leggett or his administration: Foulger-Pratt and the Montgomery firefighters’ union. [Washington Post]
