WASHINGTON – Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying two persons of interest who they say broke into a Salvation Army building and stole three days’ worth of contributions early Sunday morning.
Police released surveillance footage of the suspects and ask anyone with information about the incident to call 202-727-9099.
The Salvation Army says in a statement that the Solomon G. Brown Corps Community Center, at 2300 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. SE was broken into at about 5:30 a.m.
Once inside, according to the statement, the suspect broke into the administrative office and stole several days’ proceeds from the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle donation program.
A security guard confronted the suspect, who then drew a knife and left with a “substantial” (according to the statement) but unspecified amount of cash. No one was hurt.
Maj. Lewis Reckline, commander of the Salvation Army National Capital Area Command, says in the statement that the stolen money was “donated by the community to help locally struggling families who reside in Southeast D.C.”
Anyone with information is asked to call the Metropolitan Police Department.
He also asked for prayers from the community and added, “We are praying for the suspect(s) involved.”
To donate to the Salvation Army, go to salarmydc.org.
