WASHINGTON – Montgomery County police say a teacher accused of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old autistic student has fled to Hong Kong to avoid prosecution.
Police said Tuesday that 25-year-old Yee Tak Sharon Kui, who taught at the Frost School in Rockville, engaged in illicit sexual contact with the boy at his Silver Spring home last month.
Police said Kui abused the boy on two occasions while his parents weren’t home and that the relationship started with Kui sending text messages to boy.
“As a human being you experience shock, rage, fear, and the audacity of what happened in our home while we were at church,” the boy’s father Ronald Harding told reporters during a press conference with Montgomery County police.
The inappropriate texts were eventually found and set in motion an investigation that included Child Protective Services and school officials, who fired Kui just days after the abuse was uncovered.
Police say Kui fled to Hong Kong from New York the day after she was fired and a warrant for her arrest was issued.
Kui is charged with two counts of third-degree sex offense plus charges of sex abuse of a minor and sexual solicitation of a minor.
“It’s not a matter if we find her, but when,” said Captain Robert Carter.
Police are working with Interpol to catch Kui and bring her back to the U.S.
The Frost School, a school for children with special needs, issued a statement saying that school officials acted immediately upon learning of the inappropriate contact between Kui and the boy. The school called it an “isolated event.”
“The allegations and charges that have precipitated from them are heartbreaking to everyone in The Frost School family,” the statement read.
