White Flint Redevelopment To Go On, But When? — A judge last week rejected Lord & Taylor’s request for an injunction to delay the redevelopment of White Flint Mall. Any monetary settlement will be decided later. Lord & Taylor originally sought about $2 billion from the Mall, which hasn’t announced when it will start tearing down the facility. Montgomery County planners have previously said they expect a Preliminary Plan review of the site in early 2014. [Washington Post]
Bag Tax Revenues Not Slowing Down — Montgomery County expects to make about $2 million in revenue in 2013 from the 5-cent bag tax fee for plastic and paper bags in grocery stores and all retailers. A few council members proposed narrowing the tax to just stores that sell food, arguing that the amount of revenue the tax has generated in its first two years proves it’s not changing the behavior of customers at non-food stores. The tax has generated $4,261,724 since it began in January 2012. [The Gazette]
Brown Gets Surprise Endorsement — Lt. Gov. and gubernatorial candidate Anthony Brown got the endorsement of Equality Maryland, an important lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization. Equality Maryland picked Brown over his competitors Heather Mizeur — an openly gay woman key in the state’s same-sex marriage fight — and Doug Gansler — the first statewide official to publicly support same-sex marriage.
