WASHINGTON — Traffic inched along the Inner Loop of the Beltway after a large box truck overturned early Friday afternoon near the American Legion Memorial Bridge and caused nearly a 10-mile backup.
The crash was cleared before 3 p.m., but major residual delays remained and continued throughout the afternoon and evening.
As of 8 p.m. delays continued along the Inner Loop, George Washington Parkway and the Whitehurst Freeway.
Earlier in the evening, delays were reported across the Beltway even in Maryland. Local roads were also jammed as drivers sought alternate routes especially in Virginia.
“The damage was done,” says WTOP traffic reporter Bob Immler, adding that McLean, Va., was experiencing “a lot of the fall out.”
Delays were reported through Bethesda, College Park and Greenbelt. Roads leading to the Chain Bridge are also being impacted by the earlier incident.
Finally, water main work on outbound Canal Road in Georgetown added to the mess as M Street and the Key Bridge backed up.
