WASHINGTON – A woman dying of ovarian cancer planned and left a gift for her loving husband and children that they received two years after she died.
A month before 46-year-old Brenda Schmitz died, she prepared a gift for her family.
She wrote a letter to a Des Moines, Iowa, radio station, but asked a trusted friend to hold onto the letter until her husband had mourned her, moved on, and found a new love, according to radio station Star 102.5.
Shortly after Schmitz’s husband, David, announced his engagement, the trusted friend delivered the note to Star 102.5.
Last week, the station invited David Schmitz to the studio, to hear the contents of the letter from his wife.
In the letter, Brenda repeated her discussions with David: “I believed he’d follow through with the attitude and courage I know he possesses, what a great husband and father he is.”
“He is the one making the best decisions from here on out for my family and ultimately finding a caring and compassionate woman in time to help raise the boys. She must be quite a lady,” Brenda wrote.
Brenda had glowing words for her husband’s intended, whom she referred to as “David’s new lifelong partner.”
“Thank you. I love you, whoever you are,” she wrote.
According to Los Angeles TV station KTTV, Star 102.5 has a history of granting Christmas wishes.
Brenda asked the station for a week of pampering for David’s new love, and a trip for her family.
Local businesses granted all of Brenda’s wishes, including a four-day trip to Disney World for her family.
