Earlier this week, the nonprofit helping to put Bethesda’s chronic homeless announced it got some financial help from Apartments.com, a nationwide apartment listing subscription service.

Bethesda Cares got a $5,000 award from Apartments.com for its Help for Homeless Grant Program. Bethesda Cares was one of 16 organizations to get the funding out of 500 applicants.

The money will go toward security deposits, first and last month’s rent and shopping for assorted toiletries and dry goods — a particularly big deal for homeless clients who haven’t had anything new for years.

The County Council recently passed a budget appropriation for $650,000 to fund the placement of 15 chronically homeless individuals in permanent supportive housing. The move was a result of the county-backed 100,000 Homes surveying campaign that Bethesda Cares took part in.
