Death Shrines: Washington’s Other Monuments

"This vibrant shrine, created in memory of Derrick Rawls, is in a quiet alley in the Petworth neighborhood of Washington DC. It displays colorful testimonials from his friends and family," photographer Lloyd Wolf writes on his blog, Washington's Other Monuments.

Derrick Rawls, 20, was killed Feb. 4, 2011.

700 block of Fairmont Street NW, Washington, D.C. A scene marking the shooting death of Omar Sykes, a 22-year-old Howard University student.

4249 6th Street SE, Washington, D.C. Banita Jacks was charged with killing her four young daughters and keeping their decomposing bodies in the house for months before she was arrested by authorities.

2300 block of Ainger Place SE, Washington, D.C. On May 3, 2011, 20-year-old Alphonzo Epps died from a stab wound. He was known as "Fonnie Fee" to his friends.

3400 block Croffut Place SE, Washington, D.C. This shrine honors Angelo Alphonso Payne, who was shot to death Dec. 30, 2012.

500 block of Crittenden Street NW, Washington, D.C. Antoine Bates, 23, was killed in Petworth June 23, 2012.

Florida Avenue and North Capitol Street, Washington, D.C. Billy Mitchell, 33, was shot in Bloomingdale Jan. 19, 2011, while walking home around 11 p.m. About 30 friends and family members attended a candlelight vigil for him.

Shaw Middle School at Garnet-Patterson, Washington D.C. In 2010, Brian Betts, a teacher at Shaw Middle School at Garnet-Patterson who also happened to be gay, was killed in what some believed to be a hate crime.

5300 block of 85th Avenue, New Carrollton, Md. Christopher Donald Smith, 16, was shot outside the New Carrollton Metro Station Feb. 6, 2012.

3800 block of Quincy Street, Prince George's County, Md. Two men -- 26-year-old Bernard Brooks Jr. and 27-year-old Demetrius Dontae Kosh -- were shot while sitting in a black Cadillac in Prince George's County.

535 Edgewood Street NE, Washington, D.C. Dezmine Perkins, 16, was found May 1, 2010, with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.
