WASHINGTON – The stars are coming into alignment for a new indoor football stadium and team in the D.C. region.
The Arena Football League sent a “letter of interest” to the developers working on building an arena in Maryland’s Montgomery County near the Shady Grove Metro station. The AFL says it’s been interested in coming to D.C. for a while and with the right building and ownership group, they will.
That sits well with Tom Doyle, co-owner of D&A Sports, the development group working for the past six years to break ground on an arena. Still in the development stages, he envisions a privately-funded 6,500-seat area being built on land west of the Shady Grove Metro station. The cost is estimated at $50 million.
If the D.C. region gets an indoor football team, they would likely play in the American East Division alongside the Philadelphia Soul, Cleveland Gladiators and the Pittsburgh Power.
The season lasts 20 weeks from March to August and the smaller, indoor field games are faster-paced and higher-scoring than NFL games.
