WASHINGTON – A tax-free holiday is under way in Maryland, which could mean good things for back-to-school shoppers.
The tax-free week, which goes from Aug. 11 through Aug. 17, applies to clothes and foot apparel that costs $100 or less. The six percent state sales tax break does not apply to items like pencils, paper or backpacks, despite the amount of school supply shopping that goes on this time of year.
Tax exempt items include items such as sweaters, shirts, slacks, jeans, dresses, robes, underwear, belts, shoes and boots.
Find a more comprehensive list of exempt and still taxable items on the comptroller of Maryland website.
Another tax-free period comes up in February when the state sales tax will not apply to the sale of any Energy Star Product or solar water heater.
