WASHINGTON – Looking to make the most of the long holiday weekend?
“A Capitol Fourth” is always the most prominent musical event when it comes to celebrating Independence Day.
The free concert event begins at 8 p.m. Thursday on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. This year’s performers include Barry Manilow, Neil Diamond, American Idol winners Candice Glover and Scotty McCreedy, and the National Symphony Orchestra.
No tickets are required, so arriving early is always recommended.
Some local music venues are providing alternatives to the more crowded events around the region.
In Arlington, IOTA Club and Cafe will project the National Fireworks display on a large on-stage screen during their no- cover July Fourth celebration.
In the District, the Rock & Roll Hotel and DC9 will be hosting free July Fourth celebrations. The Rock & Roll Hotel boasts a view of the fireworks from their rooftop deck.
Scheduled for 8 p.m. Friday at the 9:30 Club, the ultra-eclectic quartet Brazilian Girls are perfect for concert-goers looking to expand their musical horizons.
Former D.C. resident and guitar legend Bill Kirchen is scheduled to perform Saturday at the Birchmere.
Kirchen is known as the “Titan of the Telecaster,” a reference to the Telecaster guitar, which is synonymous with late local legends Danny Gatton and Roy Buchanan.
