WASHINGTON – An American who was killed Friday during demonstrations in Egypt has been identified by media outlets as a 21-year-old college student from Chevy Chase, Md., with an interest in the Middle East and working for peace.
The Washington Post reports that the State Department only confirmed that an American had died during the clashes in Alexandria.
Hilary Rosen acted as a spokeswoman for the family on Friday night and said they lived in Maryland. She also released his name as Andrew Driscoll Pochter. According to local reports, acquaintances said he was from Chevy Chase.
According to Pochter’s family statement, he had gone to Alexandria for the summer to teach English to Egyptian 7-and 8-year olds and to improve his Arabic. He was planning to return to Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, for his junior year.
It is reported that Pochter spent a year in Morocco after graduating from Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School. His stay there for two years ago coincided with a time of protests in the North African country, and he wrote about his observations in a newspaper published there.
The family released a statement and asked for privacy on Friday night.
