Hospital chain MedStar Health is expanding its network of walk-in clinics, announcing plans for two more urgent care clinics not previously disclosed.
MedStar officials have informed District regulators they will seek permission to open a combined urgent care clinic and doctors’ office in the Anacostia neighborhood of southeast D.C. A similar operation is also planned to open this summer in Gaithersburg, where regulatory permission is less complicated.
Like many health systems, MedStar is rapidly shifting its business model away from high-cost, high-intensity major hospital campuses toward a widely distributed network of facilities capable of handling all but the most serious illnesses and diseases.
The health system’s urgent care clinics operate under its PromptCare brand, and will feature extended evening and weekend hours.
Also, MedStar continues to develop a PromptCare and MedStar Physicians office in Adams Morgan, which they expect to open in September or October. The system hopes to open a location by January at Eastern Market on Capitol Hill, where it is finalizing a lease.
MedStar is still scouting real estate for a $23 million, 70,000-square-foot multi-specialty clinic in downtown D.C., spokeswoman Ann Nickels said.
Since first announcing its plans to aggressively expand its outpatient presence, the system has opened a clinic in Mitchellville, a PromptCare in Wheaton and took over operations of the medical center at the Leisure World retirement community in Silver Spring.
