WASHINGTON – Virginia is transferring land to be used as part of the Pentagon 9/11 memorial.
The 1.7 acres of land, currently owned by the Virginia Department of Transportation, are inside a loop ramp at Columbia Pike and Washington Boulevard to the Department of Defense.
The land will be used for the Visitor Education Center for the National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial.
“They chose that location, specifically because it’s in the flight path of flight 77,” says Lauren Mollerup with the VDOT.
American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon on September 11, 2001.
The land transfer will allow pedestrian access from Columbia Pike to the visitor center and to the Pentagon 9/11 Memorial across Washington Boulevard, Mollerup says. There may eventually be a tram service as well.
The Pentagon 9/11 Memorial Fund, hopes to break ground on the new visitors center in time for this year’s 9/11 commemoration.
