WASHINGTON – The backlog of disability claims filed at the Veterans Affairs Department topped 903,000 this week.
Veterans are growing increasingly frustrated with long waits for help.
More than 633,000 of the claims are more than 125 days old, Nextgov reports.
While tens of thousands of cases have sitting for two years, the VA has processed more than 1 million claims in the last four years.
The VA recently told members of Congress it’s trying to speed up the process. The Veterans Benefits Administration has set up “express lanes” for uncomplicated claims involving one or two medical conditions.
But VA Undersecretary for Benefits Allison Hickey says the process has grown more complex due to vets filing for compensation for multiple conditions, Nexgov reports.
Critics say the agency has grown but hasn’t become more efficient.
