WASHINGTON – A really big beer festival is planned for Saturday afternoon near Nationals Park, and it’s not a typical Oktoberfest celebration.
This beer festival has a strange name: Snallygaster.
“In looking at different names, we came upon Snallygaster, which is this supposed late 19th, early 20th-century monster that terrorized people in this region,” says Greg Engert, beer director for the Neighborhood Restaurant Group.
Engert selected the 150 craft brews for Snallygaster, where attendees can drink a 14-ounce pour or sip a 6-ounce pour.
“It’s more things to try and it guarantees more places to get beer, so it will spread the crowd out a little bit better,” Engert says.
Snallygaster is the successor to a five-year-old Oktoberfest that became so popular, it outgrew its Alexandria neighborhood.
“I think what sets this one apart is the scope of it, for sure,” Engert says.
Along with artisan craft brews, there will be food from participating restaurants, including roasted turkey legs, meatball heroes and sausages.
The beer festival will benefit Arcadia, a center for sustainable food and agriculture.
The festival will be held at Yards Park on the banks of the Anacostia River by the Southeast waterfront.
Tickets are $25 or $50 and can be purchased online at snallygasterdc.com.
