WASHINGTON – During the month of September, fire service members around the country will climb 110 stories in tribute to the firefighters who lost their lives on 9/11.
Locally, groups will gather in Virginia and Maryland to honor and remember the 343 FDNY firefighters who died that day.
In Maryland, an honorary climb will take place at the Gaylord Hotel at National Harbor in Prince George’s County on Sept. 8. Members of the public are invited to join firefighters during the climb, but must register “>here.
An honorary climb was held in the District on April 25.
Each climber carries a photograph and biographical sketch of a firefighter who died on Sept. 11, 2011.
Each climber will pay $25 to climb, with all proceeds going to the victims’ families. This climb is expected to bring in between $5,000 and $7,000 for the families of the firefighters.
The first stair climb was held Sept. 11, 2005 when five Colorado firefighters gathered at a high-rise in downtown Denver to climb 110 flights in memory of the New York firefighters. The event grew from there.
