WASHINGTON – A pack of wild dogs on the loose in a Maryland county has killed two pets and sparked concern in the community about further attacks.
WJLA reports up to five wild dogs are roaming a wooded area in the St. Inigoes community in St. Mary’s County. The dogs first came to the attention of animal control officers last summer, and seven feral puppies have been trapped and euthanized so far.
Leroy Owens, an animal control officer, tells WJLA some think the dogs may be pit or shepherd mixes. A pack of dogs already has killed a basset hound in the area, as well as a dog named Gizmo, which belonged to owner Brian Corbin.
Corbin says he let Gizmo out Saturday morning, and later found him dead. Authorities have not been able to trap the adult dogs, and some in the community are worried about their own safety.
“They tore his throat up pretty bad,” Corbin tells WJLA of Gizmo’s attack.
