WASHINGTON – When the going gets tough at work, some people can’t help but contribute colorful language to the office discourse. Most of those people are in D.C., which tops the list of cities where employees are most likely to swear in the workplace, according to a new CareerBuilder survey.
Sixty-two percent of District respondents say they curse in the office. Denver and Chicago come in second and third nationally.
When it comes to age, employees between 35 and 44 years old are most likely to swear, with 58 percent of respondents admitting to the practice. About half of people 25 to 54 years old admit to cursing on the job.
Despite the prevalence of workplace swearing, employers do not look kindly on employees who use bad words.
Eighty-one percent of managers say excessive cursing makes people seem immature or unprofessional. About 71 percent worry about lack of control, and 54 percent say it makes the employee appear less intelligent.
