WASHINGTON – At least one person was trapped in an SUV after it was struck by a freight train Tuesday morning in Bladensburg, according to the Prince George’s County Fire Department.
The CSX train hit the SUV at the railroad crossing in Edmonston/Hyattsville at the 4500 block of Decatur Street after 10 a.m. Tuesday, reports the fire department via Twitter.
The train stopped and fire and medics worked to gain access to the SUV, which ended up about 20 to 30 feet north of the crossing.
Emergency responders were able to get to the driver just after 10:30 a.m. The woman was transported to a local hospital for serious non-life-threatening injuries.
Nobody else was injured.
An eyewitness to the crash tells WJLA that the victim had nowhere to go and seemed unaware that a train was coming.
This March, a CSX train struck a tow truck and a car in Riverdale, Md. Nobody was injured.
The driver of that car was later arrested by Riverdale Park police and charged with driving while under the influence for allegedly driving his car onto the railroad tracks while intoxicated.
