WASHINGTON – Another road race is apparently coming to the District, this time courtesy of worldwide athletic apparel giant Nike Inc.
A running enthusiast/journalist stumbled across this page today on Facebook, which reads “Inaugural Nike Women’s Half Marathon — Washington, D.C. — Spring 2013.”
Nike has not yet returned phone calls seeking elaboration, but Robyn Johnson, a spokeswoman for the D.C. Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency, said Nike has reached out unofficially to District officials about planning. The agency convenes the Mayor’s Special Event Task Force, a cross-jurisdictional group that oversees major event permitting and planning.
“[Nike] has not presented a proposal to the Mayor’s Special Events Task Force, therefore, at this time, I am unable to provide any additional information,” Johnson wrote in an email.
The Nike Women’s Marathon series is slated to stop in San Francisco later this year in October, and is open to both men and women. Finishers get an “official Tiffany & Co. finisher’s necklace,” according to the page.
We’ll update you if Nike gets back to us.
