WASHINGTON – A deputy had already stopped Michael Bryan Sager for defective equipment on his vehicle and was explaining the citation when the 29 year old bolted from his truck and took off running on Friday morning, authorities say.
The deputy pursued Sager, of Stafford, Va., through the woods as additional units arrived to assist. Sager continued running into the Rappahannock River near Falmouth Beach, where he waded across and got away, according to a news release from the Stafford County Sheriff’s office.
Officers from the Fredericksburg Police Department were called to search their side of the river, but Sager was not found. However, a backpack containing numerous baggies of marijuana was found on a little island in the river, which authorities say Sager stashed while he waded through the water.
Shortly before 1 p.m. on Friday, Sager turned himself in at the Stafford County Sheriff’s office. He is charged with marijuana possession and intent to distribute, obstruction of justice and numerous traffic violations.
