Unsolved Md. assaults have residents on edge

WASHINGTON – Five unsolved sexual assaults in Hyattsville, Md. have put residents on edge.

The assaults began in mid-March. The most recent one occurred on April 20.

Three out of five incidents were rapes, police said. The attacks occurred near the West Hyattsville Metro Station, close to Jamestown and Queens Chapel roads.

Three of the five incidents happened along the Northwest Branch hiker-biker trail. The trail is patrolled by Maryland-National Capital Park Police.

Hyattsville police say they are unsure if the incidents are related. They believe at least two suspects are behind the attacks, but they say there is no “tangible evidence.”

One common suspect description is a Hispanic male in his 20s, at 5’5″ to 5’7″ tall.

Police are recommending that people don’t walk alone in the area. They say there’s safety in numbers.
