WASHINGTON – Don’t cry over spilled milk, but it’s probably fair to cry over the spill that resulted in a shattered BCS trophy.
The $30,000 Waterford Crystal trophy toppled over at the University of Alabama athletic facility, sending the perfectly formed crystal football into a million pieces.
The trophy was accidentally knocked over when the father of a player on the team got his foot caught on a rug beneath the trophy display.
Athletic department spokesman Jeff Purinton said the crystal trophy was on display in the Mal Moore Athletic Facility as part of the festivities for the Crimson Tide’s spring football game on April 14 in Tuscaloosa.
University officials say they will replace the trophy soon.
It’s not the first trophy to take a tumble.
The glass trophy for the 2011 Independence Bowl slipped through the paws of the University of Missouri’s mascot, Truman the Tiger, before the game. Truman later tweeted, “Can I borrow some receiver gloves? My paws were a little wet from the rain this morning.”
Singer Taylor Swift dropped one of her four Grammy Awards upon entering the press room in 2010. Swift apparently needed help handling all her accolades. Her broken award was reportedly replaced after the ceremony at the Los Angeles’ Staples Center.
Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos will never live down the night in 2011 he dropped the Spanish King’s Cup which was subsequently run over.
Watching the expression on Spokane Chiefs’ captain Chris Bruton’s face as the Memorial Cup trophy broke in 2008 says it all.
And then there was Will Ferrell’s drop of the Mark Twain Comedy Award in 2011…but this one looks intentional.
