WASHINGTON – The big screen television has been delivered, the wings and pizza have been ordered and the kids at Georgetown University Hospital are “so, so excited” to watch the big game.
Laurie Strongin is the founder of Hope for Henry, an organization that helps to bring laughter and smiles to kids who are fighting for their lives against cancer and other life-threatening illnesses.
She says these kids are missing so much of their childhood, but Super Bowl party tickets have been printed and passed out to children at the hospital.
The organization was started as a tribute to her 7-year-old son Henry who lost his battle.
“During his short life, he figured out how to have an amazing time every day in the hospital, to laugh and have fun and enjoy his life,” she says.
And that’s what she’s trying to give to other children like Henry. She says it’s about helping bring as much fun into the lives of these kids as possible, to help them keep hopeful in their struggle.
“You don’t know how long they might live, but you’re making their time in the hospital good as you possibly can,” says Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School senior Brad Gerber, who helped raise money to make the Super Bowl party happen.
