FREDERICK, Md. – The latest budget for Frederick County Public schools is balanced, but teachers could receive some furlough days instead of the raise they were hoping for.
The Frederick Gazette reports that the details of the furlough days haven’t been worked out, and will likely have to be negotiated with the teachers’ union.
The school board passed a $515.1 million budget this week. An earlier version of the budget included giving raises to school system employees.
Teachers have not had a raise since 2009 and their salaries are among the lowest in the state.
The budget also calls for eliminating funding for school media assistants.
Also under the new budget, students will not see an increase in their classroom size, but they won’t be getting any new textbooks.
