TYONS CORNER, Va. – Metro station names are supposed to be simple and easy to understand. But when it comes to nailing down names for the newest stations there’s plenty of confusion.
Four of the five new stations on the Silver Line are located in Tysons Corner. So how do you separate all of them, and make them identifiable?
“That’s a great question. I don’t know,” laughed one man as he came out of a coffee shop across from the planned station at route 7 and 123 Tuesday.
Asked what the nearby station should be called, he came up with this answer: “Tysons Corner Station.”
After he was told about the four stations in Tysons, he then said. “The station at the mall.” He was then told there is another station already planned closer to the Tyson Malls.
Clearly, there is some work to be done about what each station should be called.
For the record, Fairfax County leaders say the station at route 7 and 123 should be called “Tysons Central.” They also have recommended, “Tysons-McLean” for the station on Route 123 near Colshire Drive, “Tysons I&II” for the station on Route 123, in between the two Tysons Malls, and “Tysons-Spring Hill Road” for the station on Route 7 between Spring Hill Road and Tyco Road.
Riders can weigh in as well. Metro has a survey where riders can pick a name for the new stations in the Tysons area, but also in the Reston and Herndon areas.
The survey will collect results for the next month.
