WASHINGTON – Gas prices are really taking off again, and it’s not expected that they’ll come down any time in the near future.
The latest WTOP gas survey shows the average price of regular shot up 11 cents to $3.60 over the past week.
Mid-grade has gone up by 4 cents to $3.75 a gallon. Premium is also up by 10 cents to $3.87. Diesel is up 3 cents to $4.02 a gallon.
The average for regular fuel this week is cheapest in Maryland at $3.53. It’s $3.56 in Virginia and $3.70 in D.C.

- Regular: $3.56 (up 11 cents)
- Mid-Grade: $3.70 (up 11 cents)
- Premium: $3.81 (up 14 cents)
- Diesel: $4.01 (same)
Nationally, the average for a gallon of gas is up 4.3 cents over last week to $3.43 a gallon.
The hike in prices comes as supply sources shrink, particularly in the eastern U.S. A refinery in the Virgin Islands is about to close.
The Energy Department said two refineries in the Delaware Valley owned by Sunoco and ConocoPhillip have been idled and Sunoco plans to idle another by the middle of this year.
“The complete idling of the three refineries would collectively cut as much as 50 percent of current East Coast refining capacity,” the Energy Department said.
