Fireball reported over area skies Friday night

WASHINGTON – People from Virginia to New York reported seeing a bright flash, and something shooting through the sky Friday night, but nobody knows exactly what it was.

There was definitely something burning in the sky, what most people described as a fireball in the sky between 10 and 10:30 Friday night. Others compared it to a huge firework.

Calls came into the WTOP newsroom, and people tweeted about it. Observers wrote in to the American Meteor Society’s Fireball report from Virginia, Maryland, and as far north as New York saying they saw something in the sky.

There’s still no word from the FAA, the National Weather Service or NASA about what it was though.

The American Meteor Society describes a fireball as a very bright meteor. A bolide is a special type of fireball which explodes with a bright flash at the end.

A fireball was reported over Oklahoma and Texas earlier this week.
