Virginia plans to close the Northern Virginia Training Center by 2015, a center that opened in 1973 to serve residents with intellectual disabilities, and Fairfax County officials are considering the potential public uses for the 88-acre property, Fairfax Times reports.
Officials have already talked with state legislators in an effort to ensure the state-owned property is not sold to a private developer. Supervisor John Cook, R-Braddock, and Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Sharon Bulova, D-At large, both said they would like the facility to remain for public of community use, possibly in partnership with a nonprofit.
