One WTOP staffer is in the doghouse after calling his wife and asking her whether she had an ugly Christmas sweater. Her response: "Do you think I have ugly clothes?" Then, she sent in this photo. (WTOP Photo)

WASHINGTON – Are you in on the joke? The growing holiday trend of wearing an ugly Christmas sweater?

Old Aunt Martha from Wisconsin might be perfectly sincere with her holiday cheer as she dons colorful concoctions of yarn. But when your friends, who typically are dapper fashion plates, wear a sweater covered with bows, beads, glitter and ice skating bears….well, you know what they’re going for.

If you want in on the fun there are web sites now that focus exclusively on ugly Christmas sweaters. The Ugly Sweater Store has some sweaters you might not consider tacky. Who doesn’t like snowflakes?

Tipsy Elves gets in on the action also selling accessories such as Ho Ho Ho ties and reindeer head hats.

The Ugly Christmas Sweater Party website introduces you to “Team Ugly” frat brothers Brian, Adam and Kevin who started the business in 2008 selling 40 ugly sweaters. This year they expect 14,000 sales.

If you question whether this really is a trend the Indy Star reports google searches for the term “ugly Christmas sweaters” rose 30 percent in 2010 alone.

Email WTOP your ugly Christmas sweater photos to webmail@wtop.com. Put UGLY in the in the subject line.
