WASHINGTON — A basketball game between Cardozo High School in Northwest D.C. and ConneXions Academy in Baltimore ended abruptly Wednesday night when a brawl broke out.
The majority of the incident was caught on tape.
One man is seen saying something to a person off-camera, and within seconds the two men are locked in an argument.
After one man is shoved, others — including a Cardozo player — engage in a pushing and shoving confrontation.
Officers are seen trying to control the situation, but were unsuccessful.
Within minutes, the court is filled with clusters of fights involving both spectators and players from both teams.
At one point, a chair is thrown across the court.
Baltimore City Public Schools issued a statement following the fight:
“Baltimore City Public Schools expects spectators and student athletes to exhibit excellent sportsmanship at all times. We are currently investigating the incident that took place Wednesday evening, December 21 at ConneXions Academy and will take appropriate actions as warranted by the facts and the district’s Student Code of Conduct.”
D.C. Public Schools also released a statement:
“DCPS is aware of the incident and currently reviewing all of the information that has been gathered to this point. We are disappointed any time our student-athletes are not upholding their responsibility as leaders on and off the court. “Participation in athletics is a privilege and we expect nothing but the highest level of sportsmanship from our student-athletes. Once the facts are gathered, DCPS will move swiftly and decisively to discipline anyone who was involved.”
