Rock’s bad boys take to Twitter

WASHINGTON – Twitter is giving new meaning to the term “rock groupie.”

Fans can now follow their favorite musicians using social media, where they get a unique insider’s look into the (sometimes twisted) minds of rock n’ roll royalty, like Tommy Lee and Slash.

Gibson.com has ranked the top 10 musicians to follow on Twitter. Some do a better job of using the social networking tool, while others are better at interacting with fans.

The top 10 musicians to follow on Twitter:

  1. @DjASHBA (66,561 followers): DJ Ashba is the guitarist for Guns N’ Roses & Sixx:A.M. and the CEO of ASHBA Media. His tweets are a mix of promoting upcoming tour dates and photos of concerts.

  2. @FredDurst (1,533,051 followers): Fred Durst may be the most divisive rocker, but he gets a lot of love on Twitter (judging by his followers). And, it’s not just a one-way conversation for Durst, who responds to questions and retweets messages from his followers. A recent tweet asked his followers to respond to a question.

  3. @MarkHoppus (1,943,768 followers): The Blink-182 bassist and singer appears to be on Twitter 24 hours a day, seven days a week. His tweets are random, as well as promotional of upcoming appearances.

  4. @TMorello (125,644 followers): Rage Against the Machine and Nightwatchman guitarist Tom Morello uses his power on Twitter for good, spreading the word on social justice. Recently, he has been a key player in the Occupy Wall Street movement.

  5. @Billy (126,210 followers): The official Twitter account of William Patrick Corgan (aka the leader and creator of Smashing Pumpkins) features tweets on new music, cool videos and conversations with Corgan’s dedicated followers.

  6. @Flea333 (301,509 followers): Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea, who describes himself as “a small man” on his Twitter profile, tweets about his Silverlake Music Conservatory, a non-profit group that facilitates basic music education. He also tweets about other musicians, recommending albums and offering up praise.

  7. @Slash (1,042,928 followers): Rock guitar god, Slash has really taken to social media. He’s even created his own emoticon of his trademark top hat: lii|; )’ Lately, he’s been tweeting about his soon-to-be released solo album.
