Keye ignites Alabama State rally in 54-17 win over Mississippi Valley St.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Kareem Keye threw for 326 yards and four touchdowns and Alabama State pulled away from Mississippi Valley State for a 54-17 win on Saturday.

Down 17-13 in the second quarter, Keye threw an 84-yard scoring strike to Robert McMinn with 6:05 left before halftime and the Hornets (3-3, 2-1 Southwestern Athletic) never trailed again.

After forcing a three-and-out, Alabama State’s Maurice LaPierre blocked Alexander Davis’ punt and Kyree Langley recovered the ball at MVSU’s 26. On the next play, Jamarie Hostzclaw ran it in from there for a 27-17 lead.

Following another Delta Devils (0-6, 0-2) three-and-out, Keye threw a 38-yard scoring pass to McMinn to double the lead. The play was set up by Keye’s 36-yard completion to Hostzclaw.

McMinn caught two passes — both for touchdowns — for 122 yards.

Ty’Jarian Williams’ 1-yard touchdown run gave Mississippi Valley State a 7-0 lead, and his 28-yard scoring pass to Jaxson Davis 2 1/2 minutes later made it 14-0 with 11:20 left in the first quarter.

The Hornets have won the last nine meetings between the two in Montgomery and are 5-0 against MVSU since ASU Stadium opened in 2012.
