No. 4 Indiana rolls to 63-point win over Morehead State

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Freshman Yarden Garzon scored 16 points and No. 4 Indiana held Morehead State to four two-point baskets in rolling to an 87-24 victory Sunday, the third-largest winning margin in the program’s history.

The only other larger winning margins were 100-24 decision over Taylor on Feb. 21, 1975 (76 points) and 111-47 win over Nichols State on Nov. 10, 2019 (64 points).

The Hoosiers (11-0) limited Morehead State to 18% shooting in winning by 63 points.

Sara Scalia added 13 points and Sydney Parrish and Mackenzie Holmes 12 each for Indiana, which shot 56% from the field.

Veronica Charles led Morehead State (4-7) with six points on 2-of-14 shooting.

Indiana ended the first quarter on a 16-0 run in taking a 28-4 lead. The margin grew to 44-12 by halftime.

“There was concern we’d be a little bit flat coming out at the beginning of the game,” Indiana coach Teri Moren said. “We challenged them at shoot-around this morning. I’m proud how they responded to that.”

Indiana’s other wins at home have been by margins of 37, 56, 35, 37, 24. Its one close game was 65-61 decision over Illinois in their Big Ten opener Dec. 4.

Moren cleared the Hoosiers’ bench, with 10 players logging between 10 and 28 minutes. Garzon’s output came in 18 minutes.

Morehead State was 4 of 28 on two-point attempts and 5 of 23 from long range.

“The thing we’ve always felt we can really count on is our grittiness defensively, our toughness,” Moren said. “That travels everywhere.”

Indiana is approaching the program record for most successive wins to open a season: 15-0 in 1972, the first year for women’s basketball at the school. The Hoosiers were 14-0 in 2013-14.
