PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas (AP) — UCLA took down an AP Top 25 team with a marquee name, earned a ranking of its own, then finished off a big 24-hour span by hoisting the Battle 4 Atlantis championship trophy.
Freshman Kiki Rice scored 18 points and Gina Conti added 16 to help the 20th-ranked Bruins hold off Marquette 66-58 in overtime in Monday’s title game.
Much of the attention on the Bruins (6-0) had centered on their No. 1-ranked recruiting class, but it was the veterans who took over down the stretch — tournament most valuable player Charisma Osborne (fourth year), Camryn Brown (fourth year) and Conti (graduate transfer from Wake Forest).
Osborne, Brown and Conti combined to score eight of UCLA’s last nine baskets starting from late in the third quarter.
Chloe Marotta scored 15 points to lead the Golden Eagles (5-1), and Jordan King had just 10 points before fouling out early in overtime.
SOUTH DAKOTA STATE 65, NO. 10 LOUISVILLE 55
PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas (AP) — Myah Selland scored 14 of her 25 points in a dominating fourth quarter to help South Dakota State defeat Louisville at the Battle 4 Atlantis.
It marked the highest-ranked opponent the program has beaten since moving to Division I for the 2004-05 season.
The 6-foot-1 sixth-year forward helped the Jackrabbits (4-2) regroup after blowing most of a 17-point third-quarter lead against the Cardinals’ defensive pressure. She did just about everything, scoring 10 of the team’s final 11 points over the last four minutes.
Hailey Van Lith scored 26 points for the Cardinals (4-2), though no other Louisville players scored in double figures.
NO. 11 VIRGINIA TECH 82, KENTUCKY 74
NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) — Elizabeth Kitley scored 25 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to help Virginia Tech beat Kentucky.
Kitley, the reigning ACC player of the year, secured her third double-double of the season to help Virginia Tech (4-0) open with four straight wins for the seventh straight year.
Ashley Owusu finished with 16 points, Taylor Soule had 15 points and seven boards, and Georgia Amoore scored 14 points for Virginia Tech.
Jada Walker had 17 points and five steals for Kentucky (4-1). Robyn Benton added 13 points and Ajae Petty scored 12.
NO. 17 UTAH 93, ALABAMA 86
NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) — Gianna Kneepkens scored 21 points, Alissa Pili added 18 points and Jenna Johnson had 17 to help Utah beat Alabama.
Utah (5-0) moved up eight spots in The AP Top 25 poll after setting a school record for points in a 124-78 victory over then-No. 16 Oklahoma last week.
Isabel Palmer had 12 points and six assists off the bench for Utah, which shot 59% from the field and made 27 of 28 free throws.
Brittany Davis scored 23 points and Aaliyah Nye added 17 for Alabama (2-2). Kennady McQueen and Megan Abrams each scored 15.
NO. 19 TEXAS 82, RUTGERS 44
PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas (AP) — Amina Muhammad had 14 points to lead four players in double figures as Texas beat Rutgers in the seventh-place game at the Battle 4 Atlantis.
Shay Holle, Aaliyah Moore and Sonya Morris each had 13 points for the Longhorns (2-3), who snapped a three-game skid.
They didn’t have any major problems Monday night with the Scarlet Knights (3-4), who have an eight-player roster.
Kaylene Smikle scored nine points to lead Rutgers, which shot 30% for the game.
GONZAGA 73, NO. 23 TENNESSEE 72
PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas (AP) — Yvonne Ejim scored the go-ahead basket inside with 12.4 seconds left and Gonzaga survived three missed shots by Tennessee on the final play to win in the third-place game at the Battle 4 Atlantis.
Ejim scored 20 of her 22 points after halftime to go with nine rebounds for the Bulldogs (5-1), who closed a three-day stay in the Bahamas with two wins against ranked opponents.
Jordan Horston finished with 19 points for Tennessee (2-4), which fell 12 spots in Monday’s new AP Top 25 poll after losing to now-No. 20 UCLA in Sunday’s semifinals. They went 1-2 in their Atlantis appearance, falling to 2-4 for the first time since the 1981-82 season.
No. 18 OREGON 66, SOUTHERN UTAH 54
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Te-Hina Paopao scored 17 points and Oregon defeated Southern Utah.
Grace VanSlooten had 12 points, five rebounds and three assists for Oregon (4-0). Chance Gray added 12 points. VanSlooten and Gray are freshman starters for the Ducks.
Oregon led 35-25 at halftime, then outscored the Thunderbirds by 16 in the third quarter. Oregon scored 12 points off of six turnovers in the period, shot 50% from the field and made 4 of 6 3-pointers.
Oregon led 59-33 through three quarters before the Thunderbirds outscored the Ducks 21-7 in the final period.
Cherita Daugherty led Southern Utah (2-3) with 17 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Lizzy Williamson had 12 points and nine rebounds, and Megan Jensen had 12 points and eight rebounds.
