WASHINGTON — Maryland Men’s Basketball Head Coach Mark Turgeon announced Sunday that junior forward Ivan Bender suffered a torn meniscus in his right knee in the team’s 66-45 win over UMBC Friday. Bender is set to miss the rest of the 2017-2018 season.
Bender is scheduled to have surgery later this week.
“Ivan has been playing some of his best basketball over the past month,” Turgeon said, “He has developed into a strong contributor for our team and we are going to miss his leadership and presence on the court. We are confident that he will make a full recovery.”
The 6 feet 9 inches 228 pounder from Capljina, Bosnia and Herzegovina played in all 15 games of the season with a career-high seven starts this season. Bender was averaging 3.4 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game for the Terps.

The (12-3, 1-1) Terps next game will be home to (11-4, 1-1) Penn State on Tuesday, at 7 p.m. at Xfinity Center in College Park, in a Big Ten Conference game.
